George Washington Brackenridge Sculpture

Pompeo Coppini
Side view of Bronze sculpture of George Brackenridge seated

A bronze figure of George W. Brackenridge, seated with quiet dignity, just north of Parfun Way. Sculpted by the renowned Italian-born artist Pompeo Coppini, this powerful figure honors the legacy of a man whose contributions to San Antonio are still remembered today. Brackenridge, a financier and philanthropist, is one of the key reasons we have the park in its present form. His generous donation of land in the early 20th century helped shape what is now Brackenridge Park, making it a beloved green space for generations to enjoy. Originally created in plaster in the 1930s, Coppini’s sculpture was not cast in bronze until 1969, under the direction of his longtime colleague, Waldine Tauch. The statue was placed at its current location in 1970, with its orientation adjusted in 2006 as part of the redesign of the entrance. Brackenridge’s legacy is immortalized in this thoughtful sculpture. It stands as both a tribute to the man himself and a reminder of his lasting impact.

The plaque at the base of the statue reads: George W. Brackenridge January 14, 1832–December 28, 1920 The world knew him as a great financier, a great philanthropist, a great friend of lower and higher and eternal education. The students past, present, and future, for whose education he provided, are his memorial.
