The life-sized lion sculpture at Lions Field is a true symbol of strength and pride in San Antonio. Standing tall at eight feet and stretching 14 feet in length, this is a stunning Italian marble masterpiece. Designed by renowned sculptor Louis Rodriguez, the lion rests atop a stone pedestal, its powerful form capturing the attention of all who pass Broadway since 1925. However, in 2002, tragedy struck when a tree fell on the monument during the July floods, knocking the lion off its pedestal and causing significant damage. After six months of restoration work by Lupe Rodriguez, the artist’s nephew, the lion returned to its rightful place, restored to its former glory by Rodriguez Brothers Memorial. Today, the lion continues to watch over the Lions Field Community Center as a beloved landmark, standing as a tribute to the community’s enduring connection to its history, artistry, and resilience.
