Sandboxes, treehouses and a meandering water channel with wading and splash areas are all part of a proposed nature play area at Brackenridge Park.

This year, Fiesta attendees will have a chance to support the $10 million park improvement. Texas Cavaliers, organizers of San Antonio’s River Parade, announced Thursday that the Brackenridge Park Conservancy would be the organization’s charitable honoree this year.

The 2-acre play area, dubbed the Nature Playscape, will focus on accessibility and inclusivity for children of all abilities, says Brackenridge Park Conservancy CEO Chris Maitre, and give them an opportunity for exploration and free play.

Plans for a one-of-a-kind, $9.7 million nature playscape with slides and water features are continuing to move ahead at Brackenridge Park in San Antonio. Construction for the interactive playground will begin on April 1, 2026, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) posted on Tuesday, November 26.

Before becoming one of San Antonio’s oldest parks, the area known as Brackenridge Park was treasured for its many water springs. The springs provided water to missions in the area, such as Mission San Antonio Valero — now known as the Alamo.

Brackenridge Park has served as a gathering place for 12,000 years with Native American artifacts found in the area dating back as far back as 9,200 B.C.

This year, the park celebrates 126 years since its founding with its second Brack Bash from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Sunken Garden Theater.

The Brackenridge Park Conservancy is inviting San Antonians to its second annual Brack Bash, a free community celebration honoring the city’s historic park. The event takes place Saturday, November 15, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sunken Garden Theater in Brackenridge Park.

This year’s Brack Bash brings together live music, family-friendly activities, and local eats in one of the city’s most scenic spots. Highlights include Los Viejitos car club’s vintage car show, face painting, chalk art, a petting zoo, and food trucks offering a variety of bites.

Brackenridge Park Conservancy and San Antonio Sports ACTIVATE have teamed up for free fitness classes this summer.

Brackenridge Park in San Antonio has 126 years of history and the bones of a world-class park.

The heavily wooded area near the headwaters of the San Antonio River north of downtown has seen human occupation for 12,000 years. In 1899, George Brackenridge donated 199 acres to the city.

Over the years the park has grown to 343 acres. The park now includes the zoo, Japanese Tea Garden, museum, and municipal golf course. Walking trails, pavilions, and picnic tables are tucked under the trees along the riverbank. The park’s scenic roads are worth a Sunday drive.
